1. Introduction

Atsushi Mori (森 篤史; “we”, “us”) provides MANUL, a music notation editor (the “App”), and the website at manulscore.com (the “Site”). This Privacy Policy (the “Policy”) explains how we handle information in the App and Site, together called the “Service”.

2. Information We Collect

In the Service, we do not collect the content or file names of your scores. The scores you create are stored on your device and are not sent to our servers.

In the App, we handle the following information.

We do not use the identifier in usage data to identify you by name or email address. It may be associated with information you provide if you include your name or email address when sending feedback or responding to a survey.

The App communicates with the Site as needed to provide the App, such as to check for updates. These connections send us information such as your IP address. The App needs them to work, so they cannot be turned off, including by the setting above.

Requests to the Site, including those from the App, are handled by Cloudflare. Cloudflare may process information about those requests, such as IP address and information about the browser or app making the request, and may set the cookies necessary to operate the Service, understand how the Site is used, and protect the subscription form from abuse. We set no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. You can refuse cookies in your browser settings, though parts of the Site may not work correctly.

When you subscribe to the newsletter, we collect the email address you enter, the language shown when you subscribed, and the time of subscription.

When you join our beta test program, we may ask you to join a Google Group. Google processes the email address you enter, and we receive it as the group’s owner.

3. How We Use Information

We use the information above to:

• understand how the App and Site are used, and improve them;
• provide the App, keep it working correctly, and find, investigate, and fix problems;
• keep the Service secure and prevent abuse of the subscription form;
• respond to feedback, surveys, and inquiries;
• recruit and manage participants in the beta test program;
• send MANUL news, such as releases and updates, surveys, promotions, and sales, by email; and
• keep records of newsletter consent as required by law.

We do not use the information beyond these purposes without your consent.

4. Service Providers

The following providers process information for the Service. We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information with anyone other than these providers, except:

• where required by law;
• where necessary to protect someone’s life, body, or property and your consent cannot reasonably be obtained;
• in connection with a transfer of the Service to a successor, who would remain bound by this Policy; or
• with your consent.

All of these providers are located in the United States, and information is processed there. We provide personal data to them having confirmed that each maintains a system for continuously taking measures equivalent to those Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information requires. Contact us using the details in Section 11 for information about those measures.

The Service may link to sites we do not operate, such as the app store. Their own privacy policies apply to information handled there.

5. Security

We use appropriate technical and organizational safeguards to protect collected information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or loss. Only we handle the information; access to each service is protected by authentication and limited to the minimum privileges needed. Information sent between the App, the Site, and our providers is encrypted in transit.

For details of the measures we take, contact us using the details in Section 11; we will respond without delay, except for details whose disclosure would itself undermine those measures.

6. Retention

We retain information only for as long as needed for the purposes above. Usage data, crash logs and diagnostic information, and the information that accompanies requests to the Site are retained according to the retention policies of the relevant provider. Feedback and survey responses are retained for as long as we need them to respond and to make improvements.

We retain a newsletter email address until you unsubscribe. An address that email permanently fails to reach is treated the same way. After that, we retain the minimum information needed on a suppression list to ensure that we do not send to it again. We do not use that information to send email. We retain records of newsletter consent for the period required by Japan’s Act on Regulation of Transmission of Specified Electronic Mail.

We retain a beta participant’s email address until you leave the Google Group, or until we end the program.

7. Your Choices and Requests

The App has no accounts, so there is nothing to register or close.

Sending usage data is on by default. You can stop it at any time in the App’s settings, using the “Send usage data” setting. This stops future transmission; changing the setting does not automatically delete information already sent.

You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link included in every newsletter email. You can leave the beta test program at any time by leaving the Google Group.

You may request that we notify you of the purposes for which we use the personal information we hold about you, and that we disclose, correct, stop using, erase, or stop providing it to third parties. Email the contact in Section 11 from an address matching the information we hold; if it does not match, we may ask for further confirmation. If we cannot identify the relevant records, we may be unable to fulfill the request. A request through an agent is possible on receipt of a document establishing the agent’s authority. There is no fee. We may be unable to delete information on the suppression list where it is needed to ensure that we do not send to you again.

8. If You Are in the EU/EEA or the UK

The Service is not directed at residents of the EU/EEA or the UK. We do not distribute the App there, and we do not accept newsletter subscriptions from those regions.

9. Children’s Privacy

The Service is for a general audience and is not primarily directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn that we have collected a child’s personal information, we will delete it promptly. Contact us using the details in Section 11 if you believe this has happened.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy when the law or the Service changes. When we do, we update the “Last updated” date on this Policy. For material changes, we will notify you through the Site, the App, or the newsletter.
